View Full Version : water in ears and nose

My sister recently took up lenght swimming.
She has 2 problems... and I am unsure if i solved her problem.
The clorine bothers her nose and ears.
My suggestion is to breath out under water and to wear a swim cap, and put
it over her ears.... solves my problems, I know when I dont have my cap on.
Any other suggestions besides wearing nose and ear plugs?
Thanks
Micheal

OK, maybe i should have said... She does not use plugs for her ears or nose.
she is thinking of using them. She didnt know that you are supposed to
breath out underwater.
Still, Martin, you do not have to mock everything i type.
Pretty bad that your self worth is so low that you have to go tat low.

You know you're supposed to breath out under water anyway, yes?

Most people just get used to it after awhile. But since she is your
sister, she might have special problems.
Has she tried a noseclip? Most people who use them seem satisfied with
the result. Yes, you can get them in Canada. No, the youth won't laugh
at her.

What kind of advice are you expecting, if you don't want advice about
noseclips or earplugs? She is already using a cap, and she already knows
about exhaling through the nose. What else do you imagine might be possible?

I advised you that most people get used to the chlorine.
I advised you to suggest a noseclip.
No charge for the mockery.

Yes, and do some exercises with her if possible. Breathing out under
water and in every position (even on the back during a flip turn) is
necessary for fun during swimming, something she can learn and not
only a matter of comfort - therefore I would't propose a nose plug as
long as she is not planning to do synchronized swimming :).
If the problem is the chlorine and not the water and breathing in
general - what exactly is bothering her?
>and to wear a swim cap, and put it over her ears....
Doesn't help for me because it's not staying over my ears - I am using
ear plugs. Give her some more time to get used to the water, tell her
to carefully rinse her ears with clean water during after-pool-shower
(dry them very gently then, do never use Q-tips or something like that
- you are certainly familiar with the discussions about "swimmer's
ear"), if she still has problems, get some ear plugs for her.

See The Swim Cap Guide for info on caps to keep water out of ears.
http://www.geocities.com/lapswimr/scg.html
Wearing two swim caps can keep out water from the ears or a swim band
and a swim cap. Chin strap caps work best as the outer
cap. There is a place in Canada ..Allstar sales that has the bubble
strap swim caps in head sizes and many colors. A good cap and goggle /
nose plug combination can make a swimmer more comfortable in the water
so they can concentrate on their swimming.

I would highly recommend double capping, even though people do make
comments at times.

i use few drops of vitamine E oil in each ear before swimming. this seems to
minimize the discomfort in ears. i think mineral oil is also oil.
