I thought i was in your boat when i first started. Peanut butter,
nuts, fig newtons, and ice cream are your friend. But especially
nuts. I'd wager there isn't anyone alive who can't gain weight with
PB and nuts...

Short of an unusual medical problem, eat more.

Foods high in Iodine might help.....
Kelp, shrimp, or even kelp tablets?
Excess Iodine can interfere with thyroid function.
I'm not sure it'd be wise tho'. ;-)
Eat more carbs. Spuds, rice, pasta, oatmeal, bread.

J,
I would second the idea of nuts. I eat raw trail mix quite a bit in
between meals and putting weight on hasn't been a problem. It keeps me
feeling full and is tasty. I would also suggest doing the big compound
exercises to add muscle weight (squat, deadlift, presses,
pulldown/chinups, rows). Do an intense workout at the gym for around
an hour a few (2 or 3) times a week. I like to drink a 1.25 pint
protein smoothie containing soy milk, banana, ground flaxseed or
sunflower seeds, strawberries, honey, etc before bed and in the
morning. Get a lot of rest and sleep and eat a lot of good healthy
food and I would figure that you would gain some weight. I had trouble
gaining weight when I was a kid, but I was playing soccer and
basketball (or any sport available) constantly and running track.

How do you know you have a fast metabolism? Did you have it
tested? Do you eat 4000 calories a day and still not gain
weight?
My guess is you're not eating enough. Figure out exactly how
many calories you consume now, then add 500 a day. Shoot for a
balance between fat, carbs and protein of about 30% fat, 50%
carbs and 20% protein.
Fat examples:
Olive oil, canola oil, nuts (avoid foods high in saturated fat
and trans fat)
Carbs:
Fruit, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, non-white breads, cereals,
etc.
Protein:
Meat, fish, milk
Before you do anything, go see a doctor and have your blood
tested. Something could be keeping your body from processing
food properly, or you may have hyperthyroidism.

Yeah, seriously, you're not eating enough. I said it before, but i'll
say it again, because i like saying it... NUTS!
Just for kicks, start paying attention to the TOTAL calories of
various packages of nuts. What a great country we live in where for a
couple dollars i can buy a day's worth of calories at the gas station
on my way to drive my big gas guzzling truck 5 miles to
work...alone...

Nuts are 75-80% fat. A tablespoon of fat has 120 calories. He
should not be getting more than 30% of his calories from fat. It
would be very easy to exceed that by eating nuts.

So what? The OP simply said he wanted to gain weight. Calories are
all that matter in this scenario. Who cares where they come from.
Not that i agree with it, but do you think hard-core Atkin's bacon and
sausage eating dieters care about fat? There's plenty of time for
30-40-30 on maintenance....
If lifting, throw a quality protien supplement in the mix. Keep it
simple in the beginning...

Well duh. Eating too much fat will certainly put the weight on.
:)

Nonsense. If all that mattered was calories, he could eat 20
tablespoons of olive oil and get 2400 calories.

You don't know what you're talking about. If he eats more fat he
will add fat to his body. I really doubt that's what he wants to
do.

Total BS.

Locker,
I agree with you that he should be eating more of everything and that
nuts should just be a supplement. The fat present in nuts is
definitely better than the fat you get from a hamburger or hotdog
though. All fats are not created/used equally. There has been
research linking consumption of nuts to a lower incidence of heart
disease which is counterintuitive to what someone might guess being
that this is a "fatty food". I would also recommend that he eat salmon
which is high in beneficial fatty acids and protein. He should be
avoiding saturated fats. As far as shooting for an exact percentage on
the fats etc if eating healthy fatty acids and other unsaturated fats
pushed him a little above the percentage ranges I wouldn't worry too
much about it since he is trying to gain weight.
Telling him to check with a doctor is good advice since this is
concerning him enough to be asking about medicine.

Do you smoke cigarettes by any chance? If so that's your problem. I
gained 15 pounds in a month when I quit.

Maybe you won't absorb all of it in one sitting, but explain to me why
you can't get 2400 calories from 20 teaspoons of olive oil?

Nor do you. You can eat too much chicken breast and add fat to your
body. Or rice. Working out or not, your body can turn just about
anything into fat if there's too much of it. Calories matter. A lot.
That's why i said make sure some quality protein is in there if you're
lifting.
