>>
>> NYACK, N.Y. — Nearly every day during the past year, Fleming Taylor
>> walked into the Starbucks on Main Street as the doors opened, sat in
>> the same purple velvet chair, read and discussed what was in The Wall
>> Street Journal with other regulars, and left only when the store
>> closed in the evening.
>>
>> Now the chair where the 62-year-old Taylor sat is cordoned off with
>> black ribbon and filled with bouquets and notes announcing his death.
>>
>> Orangetown Police Lt. Joseph Holahan said about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday,
>> officers were sent to 80 1/2 Main St. in Nyack after someone reported
>> a man's body in the stairwell. The death did not appear to be
>> suspicious. Holahan said he could not confirm the man's identity
>> because it was unclear whether all his relatives had been informed.
>>
>> Starbucks employees and acquaintances, however, identified the man as
>> Taylor, and said he apparently was homeless and lived beneath the
>> stairs where he was found.

Goals: Tucson Marathon next Sunday, hope to PR. Last GP race was
Thanksgiving, and though I ran it badly (see below) I am the 50-59
Women's Grand Prix winner this year. (Though I must admit to there
being another ahead of me, but she gets one of the Overall Master's
awards...)

Mon: Rest Day
Tue: 8.1 mi, with ~4 at tempo. Felt fine.
Wed: Rest Day
Thur: Thanksgiving Cross-Country Classic 5k. Now, normally I really
like this race, can't say I liked it this year. The men ran first
this year, and right before they ran the skies opened up and really
let loose. Though they ran through the washes, they hadn't really
filled yet, so we got the brunt of it. The washes, though about
2' deep and cold, weren't what was bad, it was the mud. After all
the guys ran, the muddy spots were as slick as snot! The worst was
trying to get up the hill where the jumps are. I swear I was there
spinning my wheels for a looong time and getting nowhere! And then
slipping and sliding down the other side while trying to get set
to jump hay bales and water jumps. (All while trying to protect
myself from injury since I have a marathon in a week!) But, alas, I
did get through without injury in the sucky time of 26:38, worst
yet for this course. I guess I can call it an adventure! AT least
the team won, the Grinder's women's team came in #1 by a long
shot. And as I suspected, my time didn't need to be counted, I
just needed to be a placeholder for the team. Though I can't wait
to see the pics, we must have looked a sight being soaked through
with mud splashed all over! I suppose this means I should learn
more about how the heck to run in mud.....;-)
Fri: 5.6 mi @ easy 9:40. Mid-60's, breezy. Only a bit stiff.
Sat: 8.35 mi still easy, mid-40's, stiffness is better.
Sun: 8.0 mi slow. Off well pre-dawn, I've never been able to see
trail contours well by headlamp so I tend to be really slow in the
dark. Stiffness is gone!

total: 34.65 mi

The first backpack in winter snow this season, an excellent round in
magnificent clear conditions with hardly any wind. The snowfall had
been uneven in the Lake District, with these central and southern
fells best covered while the north and north western fells had very
little. The highlight was a splendid pitch on Allen Crags, standing in
the warmth of a down jacket in the calm very cold air and soaking up
the sunset and sunrise views.
>
> Thrilled with the race result, my first in a year and a half. No idea
Nice one, Charlie. That's a sub-6:30 pace. Even with all those
distractions at the start. I guess those 30-60+ mile weeks are paying
off. I don't remember seeing any speedwork in your weeks of late. That
bodes well.
noticed an age-group competitor next to me during the
1st kilometer. Knowing that he was a good pacer, and
that we are about the same level, I thought that it would
be a good idea to track him. The 1st km had some significant
downhill, so I was not surprised to see the 3:44 time.
Unfortunately I could not see a km marker until 6km so I don't
have many splits...Anyway - my competitor surged a little ahead,
and I didn't want to push too hard so I let him go, bit I was still
steadily passing quite a few runners. Further ahead was a club
runner who is usually one of the top 50-54 age-group runners.
Quite a few steady if not gut-busting climbs saw us arrive at 6km
with a 5km split of 20:12 - still just under 40' pace overall...At this
stage Mr. AG competitor had drawn level with the clubmate, and I
was catching them both. At around 6.5 I passed them and
reached 7k with a 3:54km. At around 7.5k there was a turn
around and come back the way you came - I could see I was
about 15th overall. I was pushing a bit on the downhills and
managed to pass a few more runners. 3:43 for km 8, and 7:37
for the final 2k, saw me cross the line with 39:09 - good enough
for 11th overall, and 2nd in the AG (45-49).
5k warm-up...
Sat: off
Sun: 11k including 7 x 600m hills, 20' bike.

Total: 64km (40 miles), 3:20 bike
YLE 8.5.2008. Haastateltavan energiaherran suusta: "Olemme joutuneet
huomaamaan, ettemme kovista yrityksistämme huolimatta kyenneet vakuuttamaan
Suomen kansalle ydinvoiman tarpeellisuutta lainkaan!" .. ..

Ja melkein itkua vääntävää ydinlobbariherraa yksi toisensa perään
kuvaruutuun enemmän kuin harminsa kiukkua nieleskellen. Eikä mairitteluun
todella ole syytä. Suomen kansa oli pannut karut faktat esiin. Gallupin
mukaan vain 20 % oli ylipäätään edes yhtä ydinvoimalaa halukas rakentamaan.
Teollisuuspiirien himoitseman triplan ydinhankke- emieliin peilaili 4 %
kannatus! Eikä edes ydinalan OL-3 plutoniumpoltolle ja
isotooppiuraanikaivoshankkeille uraanirikastamoineen välttämättömän
NATO-jäsenyyden suosio ole ylittänyt 20 % pöyristyttävän pientä
kannatusnyanssiaan kovasta, megalomaanisesta painostuksesta piittaamatta.
Toki jo Niinistön pitämän nuorisoparlamentin 80 % ydinvastaisuuden kanssa
kaikki kivasti stemmaa.

Ehkä silti kaikkein tärkein on yhä sanomatta.
kansa viskaa vaaleissa oppositioon takuuvarmasti JOKAISEN

I confess I don't much understand the need for protein shakes when you
can get so much protein from plain, old food.

Tonight, we had hamburgers. My wife had bought ground meat earlier in
the day but I got home first so I made them.

1. Unwrap two packages (about 2 lbs.) of ground beef, place into large
bowl. This was 90% lean.

2. Add salt, pepper, and grated extra-sharp cheddar cheese (about 4
oz.) into the bowl. The cheese helps make up for the 90% beef's
relative lack of fat. Dig hands in there and mush it all up.

3. Make into hamburger shapes, place in frying pan with olive oil over
medium heat, cook until done.

That's it - put 'em on rolls, dress 'em up how you like (for me, more
extra-sharp cheddar cheese), and enjoy a high protein, freshly made
meal. Add a green salad and you don't need anything else.

Big family or in a hurry? Cook in two or three frying pans at once. We
like having left-over burgers to microwave for dinners during the week
when we're busy which is why we make more than we need at one time.
> For any of the long time runners who haven't gone to a high school
> cross country meet you are missing a lot of excitement!
>
> My old high school team used to be pretty good a long time ago. This
> year it looks like at my advanced age and slow times I might be faster
> than half the varsity ... that's not so good for them obviously.
>
> At least in this area of the country the catholic schools tend to
> dominate the public schools at cross country.
> <end of rant>

I agree - it was blast to watch the kids run and did it for 5 years
when my daughter was in 8-12. Once a week I would adjust my work
schedule and take the girls off the school grounds for a run. The AD
refused to let either the boys or the girls run without a chaperone and
the coach had knee problems and couldn't go. My monster wasn't always
glad to see me, you know, the age where parents are to stay hidden
until then needed money or a ride.
