Most here, I'm sure, will know of the free SMC contour data for the UK.
A chap he http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteruk/ukmaps is combining the SMC maps with data from the Open Street Map project which shows roads and (a little more sketchily) footpaths. http://www.openstreetmap.org/ For parts of the country I think these maps are better than Garmin's Topo GB map as more footpaths are shown, particularly places like the Lakes where plenty of footpaths have been mapped on OSM. And if you're doing Shropshire, at least the Southern and Eastern parts, I've got maps of those linked from www.quik.clara.co.uk/maps. Regards, A fortuitous post as I'm awaiting the arrival of my new Legend HCx. In the meantime, can these maps be loaded into Mapsource? I guess there'd have to be a registry tweak that could probably be done by editing the SMC contours registry file but I don't have the confidence to try it without asking. Cheers Brian |

I don't think those maps can be loaded into MapSource. If you want OSM maps in MapSource, I recommend this website: http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php They are routable, and include a Mapsource installer. They don't have contours, but you can install them in Mapsource alongside the SMC contours, and switch between them as you like. -- Craig Wallace http://craig.neogeo.org.uk http://www.neogeo.org.uk |

Brian Theoretically it might be possible, though I haven't tried it: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_MapSource http://freegeographytools.com/2007/a...s-to-mapsource I've got a Legend HCx myself, a lovely piece of kit. If I lost it I'd buy another immediately, which is my highest accolade. For micro SD cards try: http://www.7dayshop.com a 2GB card is less than a fiver, and will hold the map of the whole country. I've got several cards with different maps on, and just swap them as required. Regards, -- Neil Pugh http://www.blacknail.org.uk/ The online organ of the Black Nail Fellwalking and Climbing Club |

When I did it a little while ago, I just saved it onto my micro-SD card in the way he specified and it worked. If you have a USB-connected Garmin you can use the USB Mass Storage facility (Main Menu / Setup / Interface on my Vista Cx). Or if you have a card reader for your micro-SD card just plug it straight into your computer. I think you only have to use Mapsource (or a substitute program) and mess around in the Windows Registry if you have an older Garmin with a serial port instead of USB. But in that case, you may find that it doesn't have enough internal memory (and no micro-SD card) so you can only store maps for part of the country anyway. -- Tim Jackson lid (Change '.invalid' to '.com' to reply direct) |

Thanks for all the replies. I'd only really asked as I'd ordered the
new GPSr but it hadn't arrived and I thought I may be able to look at the maps on the PC. The new Legend HCx arrived today - sadly the microSD card didn't! - so I'm not much further forward. However I put in some batteries, loaded a route and took it for a stroll around some local back roads - most impressive, some similarities to the original Legnd but a lot to look at yet. Hadn't thought about getting cards for each set of maps - I spend a fair bit of time in the US so this would be useful. Thanks again Brian |

That works, but required a very high attention to detail and was very intollerant of any mistakes. I haven't tried to update my copy of OSM within Mapsource for over a year, this thread has prompted me to have a look. The routable map appears to work pretty well if today's 100km cycle ride was typical. - Nigel -- Nigel Cliffe, Webmaster at http://www.2mm.org.uk/ |
